Challenge

Design and assist with construction observation of a 20,000 SF replacement School of Nursing with modern classrooms, simulation labs, and student collaboration spaces.

 

Vision

The Brockton Hospital School of Nursing is the only hospital in Massachusetts with it's own nursing school so updating its out of date facility became a must to maintain attractiveness to students. Due to much larger space requirements for classrooms and simulation labs it was decided to build a new building and convert the 19th century era school into admin offices. The exterior design took cues from the old school and adjoining houses including clapboard siding with punched window openings and brick. Taking advantage of the southern exposure student lounges were placed along floor to ceiling glass corners, natural light is available in every classroom. Due to budget limitations curtain wall was not possible on the corners so a custom storefront condition was details to maintain the look. With its location on a hill the school has one entrance on each level with a connecting stair between them. Together these design elements create an attractive and nurturing space for the education of future nurses.
