Clinical Laboratory

Southcoast Health - St. Luke's Hospital
New Bedford, MA
Status: Never Built

Challenge

Design a complete gut renovation to an existing compartmentalized lab into an open flow modular style while keeping the existing lab operating in place.

Vision

JACA was asked to redesign an outdated hospital lab that did not allow for the installation of new technology, and was split into multiple small rooms that resulted in an inefficient workflow. The goal of the design was to reduce test times and create a design that was functional for both the main shift and the short staffed 3rd shift. All of the testing equipment needed to remain operational during construction, so the floor plan was designed to be constructed in 9 phases in which critical pieces of equipment only move one time. Detailed, puzzle piece plans of each phase were created to help the lab managers plan for equipment moves and temporary power requirements and to assist the contractor in developing the construction price and schedule.
